This letter was sent anonymously to me at the editorial offices of the newspaper Privet Peterburg in September 1993. Banya No. 43 on Fonarny Alley was closed for renovations between July and October 1993. Until February of that year one I. D. Lipachenko was indeed listed as its director. My inquiries, however, have been met with a wall of silence at the banya. All I was able to learn was that Georgy Mikhailovitch died in an automobile accident last spring.

It took me several days to make my way up the ranks of the police to someone who could definitively tell me that I. D. Lipachenko has been listed as missing since February 1993. The search, however, is still on for him, since he is accused of seven murders—the three girls were found in the basin. By way of evidence, I was handed a flyer inquiring as to the whereabouts of the man pictured on it: Ivan Dmitritch Lipachenko, age forty-three, of St. Petersburg. The photograph showed a man with longish hair, mustache and melancholy eyes. Major P. K. Matyushin of the police skimmed the letter printed above. It contained, he said, no information that might lead to the apprehension of Lipachenko. And with that he dismissed me.
